Ce type de tête a longtemps été attribué à Mayence, mais les provenances multiples dans le sud-est de la France font que l'attribution à Marseille s'est progressivement imposée.
Avec ce type de tête entourée d'un grènetis et ce revers avec les globules, ce denier correspond exactement au n° 114 de la trouvaille de Cimiez.

Historischer Hintergrund
MEROWINGISCHEN MÜZEN - MARSEILLES (MASSILIA)
(7. – 8. Jahrhundert)
Childerich II. schafft in Gallien die Goldprägung zugunsten der Silberprägung ab. Die Münzstätte von Marseille prägte Silbermünzen nach der Ermordung von Childerich II. im Jahr 675 und wahrscheinlich bis zum Beginn der Herrschaft von Pippin dem Kleinen. Die Werkstatt verfügte über eine bedeutende Produktion, deren einziger Schatz von Nizza-Cimiez eine große Vielfalt an Typen hervorbrachte. Fünf Patrizier folgten einander an der Spitze der Stadt: Ansedertus, Nemfidius, Antenor, Metranus und Abbo. Im Jahr 736 wurde die Provence dem Königreich Frankreich angegliedert und Karl Martel setzte dem Patriziat ein Ende. In Marseille scheint keine Kupferproduktion nachgewiesen zu sein. Da es keinen Text gibt, sind die Daten dieser Patrizen nicht bekannt.
