Historischer Hintergrund
GROßBRITANNIEN - VICTORIA
(20.06.1837-22.01.1901)
Victoria (1819–1901) war die Tochter von Edward, Herzog von Kent, und Enkelin von George III. Sie trat 1837 die Nachfolge ihres Onkels Guillaume IV. an und heiratete 1840 gegen den Rat ihrer Mutter ihren Cousin Albert, Prinz von Sachsen-Coburg. Sie hatte neun Kinder von ihm, wurde jedoch 1861 Witwe. Sie respektierte die Regeln des parlamentarischen Systems und versuchte, ihre Ansichten im Bereich der Außenpolitik durchzusetzen. Ihr Favorit, Disraeli, ließ ihr 1876 den Titel Kaiserin von Indien verleihen. Respektiert und geliebt, aktiv und autoritär, erschien Victoria zu ihrer Zeit als Symbol des imperialistischen Englands. Seine Herrschaft markiert den Höhepunkt der britischen Macht.
