Le fort Boyard est une fortification située sur un haut fond formé d'un banc de sable à l'origine, appelé la « longe de Boyard » qui se découvre à marée basse et est situé dans le Pertuis d'Antioche entre l'île d'Aix au Nord-Est, l'île d'Oléron au Sud-Ouest, l'île Madame au Sud-Est et l'île de Ré au Nord, appartenant à l'archipel charentais et rattachée au cadastre de la commune de l'Île-d'Aix, dans le département de la Charente-Maritime.
Si la construction d'un dispositif défensif sur la « longe de Boyard » est envisagée dès le XVIIe siècle, le projet n'est concrétisé que dans le courant du XIXe siècle. Édifié afin de protéger la rade, l'embouchure de la Charente, le port et surtout le grand arsenal de Rochefort des assauts de la marine anglaise, il est transformé en prison quelques années à peine après son achèvement. Surnommé « fort de l'inutile » par la population locale lors de sa longue période d'abandon, l'édifice est, dorénavant, essentiellement connu dans le monde entier pour le jeu télévisé du même nom, tourné sur place depuis 1990.
Le fort Boyard fait partie intégrante de l'Arsenal maritime de Rochefort qui s'étend tout au long de l'estuaire de la Charente. Il est la propriété du conseil départemental de la Charente-Maritime depuis 1989.
Il fait l’objet d’une inscription au titre des monuments historiques depuis le 1er février 1950..

Fort Boyard is an integral part of the Rochefort Maritime Arsenal which extends along the Charente estuary.. It has been owned by the Charente-Maritime departmental council since 1989..
It has been listed as a historic monument since February 1, 1950..
