Historischer Hintergrund
ZYPRIEN - ZYPRISCHE KÖNIGE - SALAMINA - EVAGORAS I
(411 - 374 v. Chr.)
Evagoras war 411 v. Chr. König von Salamis und ein treuer Verbündeter der Athener. Er nahm an der Schlacht von Knidos im Jahr 394 v. Chr. teil und eroberte fast die gesamte Insel Zypern. Er musste gegen die anderen Dynasten der Insel, Amathonte, Citium und Soloi, kämpfen. König Artaxerxes II. sandte Hekatomnos, den Satrapen von Karien, zum Kampf gegen den rebellischen Monarchen. Evagoras eroberte Tyrus und einige Städte an der phönizischen Küste. Mit Hilfe der Athener und Chabrias eroberte er die gesamte Insel Zypern mit Ausnahme von Citium. Nach dem Frieden des Großkönigs (Antalcidas) im Jahr 387 v. Chr. stand er allein vor der persischen Bedrohung. Der persische König beauftragte den Satrapen Tiribaze, die Insel wieder in das Reich einzugliedern. Schließlich wurde Evagoras besiegt und Salamis belagert. Er musste sich unterwerfen, um seinen Thron zu behalten, verlor jedoch die meisten seiner Gebietsgewinne. Er wurde zusammen mit seinem ältesten Sohn Pnytagoras ermordet. es war Nikokles, sein zweiter Sohn, der seine Nachfolge antrat.
