Apollonia Pontica liegt auf Pont-Euxin und war eine Kolonie der Milesier. Die Stadt war berühmt für ihren Apollontempel und ihre kolossale Statue, ein Werk von Kalamis. Als Lucullus 73 v. Chr. die Stadt eroberte, ließ er die Statue des Gottes nach Rom transportieren.
