Antiochos IV. war der jüngste Sohn von Antiochos III. Er war nach dem Frieden von Apameia als Geisel nach Rom geschickt worden. Er kämpfte gegen die Ägypter, verwüstete den Tempel von Jerusalem und errang mehrere Siege über Ptolemaios VI. Philometor (180-145 v. Chr.)..
