SYRIEN - SELEUCIA und PIERIA - ANTIOCHIA
(1. Jahrhundert v. Chr. – 2. Jahrhundert n. Chr.)
Autonome bürgerliche Münzprägung
Antiochia wurde 300 v. Chr. von Seleukus I. gegründet. Es war die Hauptstadt des Seleukidenreichs, bevor es zur römischen Provinz Syrien wurde. Syrien wurde 64 v. Chr. von Pompeius annektiert. Unter dem Kaiserreich war Antiochia mit 200.000 bis 300.000 Einwohnern eine der bevölkerungsreichsten Städte des Reiches. Als bedeutende Metropole des römischen Ostens war sie auch eine Stadt, die von Invasionen bedroht war. Parther und dann Sassaniden bedrohten oder eroberten die Stadt. Es wurde wie Alexandria sehr früh christianisiert. Die kosmopolitische Stadt war der Endpunkt aller Karawanen aus dem Osten.
