Marie-Louise, dite Isabelle II (1830-1904) est la fille de Ferdinand VII (1784-1830) et de Marie-Christine de Bourbon-Parme (1806-1878). Elle succède à son père en 1833 en vertu de la pragmatique sanction qui avait écarté du trône son oncle don Carlos. Sa mère est régente puis d'espartero entre 1841 et 1843. Au début de son règne, débutent les guerres carlistes. Déclarée majeure à 14 ans en 1843, elle épouse en 1846 son cousin François d'Assise, duc de Cadix (1822-1902). Son règne personnel commence en 1854 tandis que se développe l'influence de nombreux favoris et une alternance entre O'Donnell et Narváez au pouvoir jusqu'en 1868. Après un mécontentement croissant, Isabelle est chassée du trône en 1868 et la première République est proclamée. La reine se réfugie alors en France. Refusant dans un premier temps d'abdiquer, sa succession entraîne le déclenchement de la guerre franco-allemande de 1870. Elle abdique finalement en faveur de son fils Alphonse XII (1857-1885) qui devient roi en 1874. Elle meurt en 1904 à Paris.
