L’exemplaire n° 895 de MONNAIES 31, avait été vendu 265€.
La légende du droit + VECTA (pour PECTA) est connue, mais rétrograde par rapport à celle du denier B. 3618. La légende du revers est moins nette, NDVLN (avec le premier N pour les lettres AV ligaturées) pour ANDOLENVS. Les légendes des trois deniers du Belfort sont transcrites AVDOLENVS (avec les ligatures AV et NV).
Les deniers de ce monétaire AVDOLENVS sont bien attribués à la cité de Pectavis (Poitiers). Le Belfort reproduit trois variantes du denier proposé ici pour ce monétaire, et un autre denier à portrait (B. 3620) sur lequel le nom du monétaire est inscrit OAVDOLENO avec la légende OMONETARIO au droit.
Bien que Belfort ne le précise pas et que les exemplaires mentionnés sont de bon poids, il semblerait que de nombreux deniers de ce type soient fourrés, avec seulement une fine pellicule d'argent sur une âme en bronze ou autre métal. Les mines d'argent de Melle étaient pourtant à proximité...
Des deniers de ce type figuraient dans le trésor de Nice-Cimiez (pl. IX, n° 178-179).
Copy No. 895 of MONNAIES 31, had been sold for €265. The legend on the obverse + VECTA (for PECTA) is known, but retrograde compared to that of the denier B. 3618. The legend on the reverse is less clear, NDVLN (with the first N for the ligatured letters AV) for ANDOLENVS. The legends of the three deniers of the Belfort are transcribed AVDOLENVS (with the ligatures AV and NV). The deniers of this monetary AVDOLENVS are indeed attributed to the city of Pectavis (Poitiers). The Belfort reproduces three variants of the denier proposed here for this monetary, and another denier with a portrait (B. 3620) on which the name of the mint is inscribed OAVDOLENO with the legend OMONETARIO on the obverse. Although Belfort does not specify this and the examples mentioned are of good weight, it would seem that many deniers of this type were filled, with only a thin film of silver on a core of bronze or other metal. The silver mines of Melle were nevertheless nearby... Deniers of this type appeared in the Nice-Cimiez treasure (pl. IX, no. 178-179)
