Karol Józef Wojtyła, né le 18 mai 1920 à Wadowice en Pologne et mort le 2 avril 2005 au Vatican, est un prélat polonais et saint de l'Église catholique. Il est successivement prêtre, évêque puis archevêque de Cracovie et cardinal, avant d'être élu pape le 16 octobre 1978 sous le nom de Jean-Paul II (en latin Ioannes Paulus II, en italien Giovanni Paolo II, en polonais Jan Paweł II). En qualité d'évêque de Rome, il est le 264e pape de l’Église catholique ainsi que le chef d'État du Vatican jusqu’à sa mort. (c.f. Wikipédia)

Le premier pèlerinage de Jean-Paul II en Pologne eut lieu sous le slogan « Gaude Mater Polonia » . Il eut lieu du 2 au 10 juin 1979. Il a notamment visité les villes de Gniezno (3-4 juin), Częstochowa (4-6 juin) et Cracovie (6 juin).
