Le gros ou grosso (Matapan) fut créé à l'instigation d'Henri Dandolo (1192-1205, 41e doge) qui fut à l'origine politique de la prise de Constantinople par les Croisés le 17 juillet 1203. Le sequin ou zecchino d'orofut frappé pour la première fois par Jean Dandolo en 1284 à la Zecca. La Zecca est la tour qui se trouve sur la place Saint-Marc en face du Palais des Doges, que l'on peut voir encore aujourd'hui et où les monnaiesétaient fabriquées.
