Tahiti wurde zum ersten Mal im Jahr 1842 besucht. Die Marquesas, Touamotou, Société, Gambier, Australs und Wallis und Futuna bildeten Französisch-Ozeanien oder die französischen Niederlassungen Ozeaniens, die 1946 zu einem Überseegebiet wurden. Nach dem Dekret vom März 1957 Französisch Ozeanien wird zu Französisch-Polynesien.
