Lyndon Baines Johnson (1908-1973) was the 36th President of the United States from November 22, 1963 to January 20, 1969.. Born into a Texas farming family, he turned to politics at an early age.. In 1937, he became a Democratic representative from the state of Texas and in 1949 a senator from the same state.. Within the Democratic Party, he is an opponent of John F.. Kennedy. In the run-up to the 1960 presidential election, Kennedy either could not do without the Southern Democrats. So he takes Lyndon B. Johnson as running mate and therefore as vice president. On November 22, 1963, following the assassination of President Kennedy in Dallas, he was sworn in as the 36th President of the United States.. He was elected in 1964. His mandates were marked by civic movements, access to health care for the poorest and the pursuit of space exploration.. However, despite the détente with the People's Republic of China, his foreign policy will be very marked by the military quagmire in Vietnam and the death of thousands of young American troops.. Having become unpopular, even within his own party, he threw in the towel during the 1968 Democratic primary, marked by the assassination of Robert F.. Kennedy. Democratic Vice Presidential candidate Hubert Humphrey is defeated by Richard Nixon.
