Der Numidische Krieg brach 112 v. Chr. aus, nachdem Jugurtha im Jahr zuvor in Cirta, der Hauptstadt des Königreichs Numidien, viele römische Bürger ermorden ließ, als Reaktion auf Roms Versuch, sein Königreich unter Treuhänderschaft zu stellen. Der Krieg dauerte bis 105 v. Chr. Im Jahr 111 v. Chr. waren Publius Cornelius Scipio Nasica und Lucius Calpurnius Bestia Konsuln und im folgenden Jahr folgten ihnen Marcus Minucius Rufus und Postumius Albinus nach.
