Acanthe, fondée au VIIe siècle avant J.-C, était une colonie d'Andros, île de la mer Égée située sur la presqu'île d'Acté. L'atelier eut une production très importante à partir de la fin du VIe siècle avant notre ère grâce aux mines qui se trouvaient dans cette région.
