Historischer Hintergrund
BELGIQUE - ROYAUME DE BELGIQUE - LÉOPOLD II
(10.12.1865-17.12.1909)
Leopold II. (9.4.1835-17.12.1909) ist der älteste Sohn von Leopold I. und Louise d'Orléans. Er heiratete Marie-Henriette, Erzherzogin von Österreich, die ihm drei Töchter gebar: Louise, Stéphanie und Clémentine. Er verließ sich auf England, um die Ziele Napoleons III. in den Jahren 1866–1869 abzuwehren. Seine Regierungszeit war geprägt von der wirtschaftlichen und industriellen Entwicklung Belgiens, das durch die persönliche Annexion des Kongos durch den König auf dem Berliner Kongress 1885 auch zu einer großen Kolonialmacht wurde. Ohne männlichen Erben folgte ihm sein Neffe Albert I. nach . im Jahr 1909. Er vermachte den Kongo 1908 an Belgien.
