L’histoire de l’abbaye de Saint Vaast est particulièrement ancienne. Le roi des Francs Thierry III (mort en 691) fut inhumé dans l'église. En 783 le monastère fut détruit par un incendie. Charlemagne ordonna sa reconstruction, trois églises furent édifiées en même temps, dont la plus grande placée sous l'invocation de saint Vaast.
L'abbaye abrite le musée des Beaux-Arts d'Arras

Au XVIIIe siècle Vigor de Briois et le cardinal Rohan, abbé commendataire, ordonnèrent la reconstruction de l'abbaye alors très dégradée. Du fait que Notre-Dame, l'ancienne cathédrale d'Arras, avait été elle-même subi de grands dommages, un décret de Napoléon mit à la disposition de l'évêque d'Arras, Mgr Hugues-Robert de La Tour d'Auvergne, l'église de l'abbaye, que la Révolution française avait épargnée, afin que celui-ci en fît sa cathédrale. Elle fut détruite en juillet 1915 avant d'être reconstruite à l'identique. L'abbaye Saint-Vaast est aujourd'hui considérée comme le plus grand ensemble d'architecture religieuse du XVIIIe siècle.
