Dès le XVIIe siècle, les portugais s’établissent dans l’île mais abondonnent la partie Ouest à la La VOC (Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie ou "Compagnie hollandaise des Indes orientales") qui occupe Kupang en 1653. Le 20 avril 1859, la cission est définitive. Le Portugal occupera la partie orientale jusqu’à la Révolution de Oeillets. Le 28 novembre 1975, l’indépendance est déclarée. Neuf jours plus tard, l’armée indonésienne envahit le Timor Oriental qui est annexé à l’Indonésie.

From the 17th century, the Portuguese settled on the island but abandoned the western part to the VOC (Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie or \\\"Dutch East India Company\\\") which occupied Kupang in 1653. On April 20, 1859, the division was final. Portugal occupied the eastern part until the Carnation Revolution. On November 28, 1975, independence was declared. Nine days later, the Indonesian army invaded East Timor, which was annexed to Indonesia.
