Swiss national exhibitions are exhibitions that take place approximately every twenty-five years in Switzerland.. Born from the impetus of local economic committees and associations, they are inspired by traditional local and cantonal events (economic fairs) but do not correspond to the definition of a traditional fair because the presentation of products and goods is carried out with a staging of the nation in order to bring together and meet the socio-political expectations of visitors around chosen themes.. The presentation of products and merchandise tends to disappear over the course of successive editions.. National exhibitions are thus a \\\"mirror\\\" of Swiss society at a given moment..
Officially, the first national exhibition was held in Zurich in 1883.. The following ones took place in 1896 in Geneva, in 1914 in Bern, in 1939 in Zurich, in 1964 in Lausanne and in 2002 in Biel, Neuchâtel, Yverdon-les-Bains and Morat.
The \\\"national\\\" character of these exhibitions stems from the fact that they receive state subsidies and that the state chooses the dates and locations; nevertheless, the organization and content have always been defined by the organizing committees..
However, the 1883 exhibition had precedents such as the Bernese art and industry exhibitions of 1804 and 1810.. The third exhibition of crafts and industry in 1857 is sometimes considered the first national exhibition because it presented objects that were not intended for direct sale (chronometers, filters, valves, presses, pumps, etc.).. ).
Among the first topics addressed were the supply of gas, water and electricity, urban planning, and the protection of nature and heritage..
The 1883 exhibition was notable for highlighting the education sector as a key factor in a sound economy.
