Unter dem Namen Napoleon III. zum Kaiser ausgerufen, hielt Louis Napoleon am 2. Dezember 1852 seinen feierlichen Einzug in Paris.. Im Januar 1853 heiratete er Eugénie Marie de Montijo, eine spanische Aristokratin. Seine Regierungszeit lässt sich in drei Perioden einteilen: das autoritäre Reich bis 1860; das Liberale Reich von 1860 bis 1870, dann das Parlamentarische Reich im Jahr 1870. Während des autoritären Kaiserreichs übte Napoleon III. seine Macht aus, ohne sie zu teilen, kontrollierte die Presse, während die Zeitungen Selbstzensur praktizierten, um ihrer Unterdrückung zu entgehen.. Die Präfekten üben in den Departements uneingeschränkte Macht aus, die Bürgermeister, die Beamten werden von der Regierung ernannt. Wie im Ersten Kaiserreich werden Bildung und Universität überwacht. Unter Beibehaltung der Grundprinzipien der Revolution wird die Souveränität des Volkes dank der Volksbefragung aufrechterhalten. Auf wirtschaftlicher Ebene ist der Boom wichtig, die Industrialisierung entwickelt sich ebenso wie Kreditinstitute und Kaufhäuser. Durch den Krimkrieg wird das militärische Prestige gesteigert, was es Frankreich ermöglicht, eine internationale Rolle zu spielen. Der Angriff von Orsini (Januar 1858) hindert Frankreich nicht daran, in Italien einzugreifen, um den Triumph zum Prinzip der Nationalitäten zu machen, und ermöglicht die Verbindung von Nizza und Savoyen durch den Vertrag von Turin (März 1860).. Ab 1860 strebte das Imperium mehr Freiheiten an: Freihandelsvertrag mit England, Auftreten einer schwachen Opposition in der gesetzgebenden Körperschaft, Gewährung des Streikrechts (1864), Liberalisierung der Presse (1868).. Auf internationaler Ebene erwirbt Frankreich Neukaledonien und Cochinchina und fördert den Bau des Suezkanals durch Ferdinand de Lesseps. In Mexiko scheiterte jedoch die Unterstützung für Maximilian und Österreich. Die Wahlen von 1869 verliefen sehr schlecht für das Regime und die Opposition erhielt 45 % der Stimmen. Das Regime entwickelte sich dann zu einem parlamentarischen Imperium, indem es Émile Ollivier, den Führer der Orléanisten- und Liberalenpartei, an die Macht berief. Nach Sadowa im Jahr 1866, als Preußen Österreich zerschmetterte, führten die Affäre um den spanischen Thron und die Entsendung aus Ems zum Krieg, der am 19. Juli 1870 erklärt wurde. Nach zunehmenden Rückschlägen wurde die französische Armee in Metz umzingelt, woraufhin der kranke Napoleon III. am 2. September bei Sedan kapitulierte. Sobald die Nachricht bekannt wurde, verkündete Gambetta den Niedergang des Imperiums und am 4. September wurde die Republik ausgerufen.. wurde dann nach Hessen gefangen genommen und ging dann nach Kent, wo er 1873 starb..
