SAN MARINO
(13. Jahrhundert – heute)
Die kleine Republik San Marino südlich von Rimini ist seit dem 13. Jahrhundert frei. Im 15. Jahrhundert gab es sich einen Großen Rat mit sechzig Mitgliedern, die sich aus dem Adel und dem Bürgertum rekrutierten. Im 19. Jahrhundert war es eine Bastion der Revolutionäre und stand ab 1862 unter dem Schutz des neuen italienischen Königreichs, das seine Unabhängigkeit respektierte. Die Mitglieder des Grossen Rates werden in allgemeiner Wahl (eingeführt 1909) für vier Jahre gewählt; Zwei von ihnen üben die Exekutivgewalt als Kapitäne-Regenten für sechs Monate aus.
