Au droit, la légende est à peine visible autour de cette petite tête casquée. Sans le revers, aucune attribution précise ne serait possible. Bien que fourrée, cette monnaie présente une très belle épigraphie NOVO VICOS complètement lisible au revers. Cette indication permet de rapprocher ce triens des monnaies attribuées à Neuvy-en-Champagne (grâce au travail du Vte de Ponton d’Amécourt) alors même que ce type de revers avec la croix à huit branches n’est pas représentée pour cet atelier (?).
NOVO VICOS pourrait correspondre à deux ateliers différents ; Neuvy (NOVVM VICVS) ou Noyen-sur-Sarthe (NOVIOMVM), tous deux dans la Sarthe !
Les monnaies avec la légende NOVOVICO sont plutôt attribuées à Neuvy. Ponton d’Amécourt signalait qu’il “existe en Touraine sur les confins du Maine, un bourg appelé Neuvy-le-Roi, ancien chef-lieu d’une viguerie. Avant d’avoir entrepris la recherche des monnaies cénomanes j’avais, sans hésitation, attribué à cette localité, les monnaies que je viens de décrire, en constatant que leur style les rattachait au Maine. Aujourd’hui je les restitue au Neuvy cénoman dont je ne connaissais pas l’existence quand j’ai fait ma recherche des monnaies de Touraine. Non seulement j’y suis autorisé par l’ancienneté du lieu en même temps que contraint par le style de la monnaie, mais encore la rédaction de la légende m’en fait une loi ; en effet le Neuvy de Touraine est appelé par Grégoire de Tours Novicensis vicus, ce qui prouve que le nom primitif était dès le IVe siècle contracté en Novicus. (...) Au contraire tous les textes relatifs au Neuvy cénoman, avant comme après l’époque où fut frappée la monnaie, portent la forme pure Novus vicus exactement comme les légendes des monnaies (...)”. Cf. On the right, the legend is barely visible around this small helmeted head. Without the reverse, no precise attribution would be possible.. Although filled, this coin has a very beautiful epigraphy NOVO VICOS completely legible on the reverse. This indication allows us to compare this triens with the coins attributed to Neuvy-en-Champagne (thanks to the work of the Vte de Ponton d'Amécourt) even though this type of reverse with the eight-pointed cross is not represented for this workshop (?).
NOVO VICOS could correspond to two different workshops; Neuvy (NOVVM VICVS) or Noyen-sur-Sarthe (NOVIOMVM), both in Sarthe! Coins with the legend NOVOVICO are rather attributed to Neuvy. Ponton d'Amécourt reported that “there exists in Touraine on the borders of Maine, a town called Neuvy-le-Roi, former capital of a viguerie. Before undertaking the search for Cenoman coins, I had, without hesitation, attributed to this locality the coins that I have just described, noting that their style linked them to Maine.. Today I am returning them to the Neuvy Cénoman, whose existence I was unaware of when I was researching the coins of Touraine.. Not only am I authorized to do so by the antiquity of the place and at the same time constrained by the style of the coin, but also the wording of the legend makes it a law for me; in fact, the Neuvy de Touraine is called by Gregory of Tours Novicensis vicus, which proves that the primitive name was contracted to Novicus from the 4th century onwards.. (. . . ) On the contrary, all the texts relating to the Cenoman Neuvy, before as well as after the time when the coin was struck, bear the pure form Novus vicus exactly like the legends of the coins (. . . )”.
