C’est la première fois que nous voyons une frappe en cuivre pour ce jeton qui se trouve habituellement en argent.
Ce jeton est le troisième de la suite des six victimes gravée par Daniel et Frédéric Loos. D’après Hennin, p. 372 : “Les deux vers qui forment la légende du revers de cette pièce indiquent, suivant la notice publiée par les éditeurs, que le duc d’Orléans fut puni de son vote dans le procès de Louis XVI, par les députés ses égaux, et comme lui membre de la faction de la Montagne de la Convention Nationale”.
Philippe d'Orléans est le petit-fils du Régent et le fils de Louis-Philippe d'Orléans et de Louise de Conti. Avant la Révolution, il fut Grand-Maître du Grand Orient de France créé en 1773. Favorable aux idées nouvelles, il fut l'un des instigateurs de la Révolution et un ennemi de la Monarchie, son but étant de substituer la branche des Orléans à celles de ses cousins Bourbons directs. La Commune de Paris lui donna le nom de Philippe Égalité le 15 septembre 1792. Député de la Convention, il vota la mort du Roi. Compromis dans des affaires financières, il fut interné pendant six mois au fort Saint-Jean-de-Provence.Ramené à Paris, il fut jugé avec les Girondins, condamné à mort et exécuté le 6 novembre 1793 sur la place de la Révolution. Le parti légitimiste ne pardonna jamais à la famille d'Orléans d'avoir trahi la cause royale.

Philippe d'Orléans is the grandson of the Regent and the son of Louis-Philippe d'Orléans and Louise de Conti. Before the Revolution, he was Grand Master of the Grand Orient of France created in 1773. Favorable to new ideas, he was one of the instigators of the Revolution and an enemy of the Monarchy, his goal being to substitute the Orleans branch for those of his direct Bourbon cousins.. The Paris Commune gave him the name Philippe Égalité on September 15, 1792.. A deputy of the Convention, he voted for the death of the King. Compromised in financial affairs, he was interned for six months at Fort Saint-Jean-de-Provence. Brought back to Paris, he was tried with the Girondins, condemned to death and executed on November 6, 1793 in the Place de la Révolution.. The Legitimist party never forgave the Orléans family for having betrayed the royal cause.
