La frappe du thaler a commencé à Metz dès 1568 alors que la ville était déjà sous domination française. La ville avait le droit de battre monnaie avec permission spéciale du roi. D'après les travaux d'Edgard Wendling, ce type monétaire fut frappé sans interruption entre 1638 et 1653. .
