Chaim Weizmann est né le 27 novembre 1874 (18 Kislev 5635) dans la ville de Motel, en Russie occidentale. Il a fait ses études secondaires à Pinsk. Il a poursuivi ses études de chimie en Allemagne et en Suisse. Il a été l'un des principaux militants de la cause sioniste dès sa plus tendre enfance. En 1904, il a été nommé professeur à l'Université de Manchester, en Angleterre. En raison de ses découvertes scientifiques, il a été nommé deux ans plus tard chef de laboratoire des laboratoires chimiques de l'Amirauté britannique. Ce sont ses négociations assidues avec le gouvernement britannique pendant la Première Guerre mondiale qui ont abouti à la déclaration Balfour. En 1921, Weizmann a été président de l'Organisation sioniste et en 1929, il a créé l'Agence juive dont il est devenu le président. En 1934, Weizmann a créé à Rehovot l'« Institut de recherche Daniel Sief » qui est devenu plus tard l'« Institut Weizmann des sciences ». À la veille de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, pendant et après la guerre, Weizmann se trouve au centre de la lutte politique qui atteint son apogée avec la création de l'État en 1948. Il en est élu premier président et décède en fonction le 9 novembre 1952 (21 Heshvan, 5713).
