Commentary on the Jeton.

This 'jeton' is certainly the most famous and the most sought after jeton dating from the end of the monarchy, for several reasons : for the circumstances of its striking, for the person it honours, for those who received it, for the event it commemorates. It is remarkably scarce with only a few silver examples existing in the United States mainly in different museums. In France, we only know of a bronze coin, which is at the museum of Chartres. It is missing - or has never been remarked and published - from every reference collection, including that of the Grand Orient.
We have no trace of any transaction concerning this 'jeton' in our library. Feuardent only had the 'jeton' of Milly ( n° 745 "Rare" illustrated plate 3 ) in his collection and didn't know of Franklin's 'jeton' , which is not listed in his work. Castaing had no 'jeton' of the Nine Sisters and it has never appeared in sales (with reference to the 'jeton' of Milly and that of the Lodge of the Nine Sisters, see Anne Mainguy's text JETONS V, pages III to IV ). The only reference given to this 'jeton' is in the Hamburgische Zirkel Correspondenz , Medaillenwerk, Band IV, Hamburg, 1902, where it is illustrated and described under the number 469. This 'jeton' is so scarce that in 1897 when Louis Amiable published his large volume on the Nine Sisters' Lodge, he said of it (note 1 page 140 ) " In The History of Freemasonry, London and New York 1887, six volumes, Gould said that the lodge had a medal struck in honour of the great American, an assertion that the author of the present monograph is unable to confirm". Not only had Amiable, the specialist of the Nine Sisters' Lodge, never seen this 'jeton', but he was unaware, even by hearsay, of its existence. Neither is it mentioned by Charles Porset, the author of the 230-page critical commentary written to accompany the Paris reprint 1989.

As Worshipful Master of the Nine Sisters' Lodge, from June 1779 to 1781 Benjamin Franklin experienced the most brilliant period of this lodge's existence. It would seem that no 'jeton' was struck during the time he was Worshipful Master of the lodge, but another one was struck in 1784 for the death of Comte de Milly, another mythical and very rare 'jeton' which re-used the reverse side of the 'jeton' engraved for Benjamin Franklin.
Our 'jeton', dated 1783, records precisely the functions of Benjamin Franklin and the exact name of the United States at the time "the United States of north America" frenchified as SEPTentrionale ( northern). The 'jeton' was struck in his honour after the signing of the armistice of 4th February 1783, confirmed by the Versailles treaty. At this time, monarchical Europe, including England, which signed the peace treaty in 1783, recognised the United States of America as a separate nation.
This was an unheard of event and of particular significance for the future ; monarchies recognised the existence of a country without a king, and a democracy where the people governed itself, according to the principles of the age of Enlightenment. This revolution, which was ahead of its time, was marked in Paris by a splendid celebration, organised by the freemasons of the lodge in honour of peace, of the birth of the United States of America and of Benjamin Franklin.
American independence was extolled in verse and in prose in enthusiastic declamations. The hero's bust, a work of art executed by Houdon was then unveiled prior to a concert and a supper. The portrait of Benjamin Franklin on the coin is modelled on the bust sculpted in 1778 by Jean Antoine Houdon (1741- 1828 ), a pupil of Pigalle and a member of the Academy, from 1777 onwards and also of the Nine Sisters' Lodge.
The French National Library ( Bibliothèque nationale de France ) preserves in its Masonic Collection (Fonds Maçonnique FM2 89) the invitation to this celebration :

Celebration of the Academy, on the occasion of Peace and given exceptionally by the Nine Sisters' Lodge (L... des Neuf Sœurs ) along with the former Worshipful Master (l'Ex V... F... ), Franklin, on the … May, at the Redoute Chinoise, Foire Saint-Laurent.
There will be Readings, a Concert and Hymns in keeping with the event, performed by the most famous Virtuosos; followed by a Dance.
Admittance at four o'clock, and beginning of performance at six o'clock prompt.
The room will be decorated with Pictures representing the glory of France, the independence of America and the feelings of the Respectable Lodge (R L )
All the Games to be found on the premises chosen for this Celebration will be available to participants ; those admitted need not necessarily be masons.
The subscription fee is 24 Pounds. Participants may be accompanied by a Lady for the extra cost of 6 Livres for a second person and so on for each Lady.
Inscriptions up to and including the 10th May, with M. le Marquis de la SALLE, rue St Roch, near rue Poissonière, from 9 o'clock in the morning until 12 and with M. GAUCHER of the academies of London, Rouen etc ; rue St Jacques, the gate opposite St Yves, from 9 o'clock in the morning until 5 in the evening.
For the sake of order and correctness, at the time of inscription the address and occupation must be given, as well as the name, address and occupation of the Ladies to be admitted ; each entrance ticket will bear the name of the person presenting it.
Entry forbidden to all servants.
Buffet will be provided by the Society.

It is noticeable that no reference is made to the 'jeton' and this is quite normal as the Celebration was open to non-masons. The 'jeton' was no doubt distributed to the freemasons of the Lodge before the banquet (on the same day between four and six o'clock ? )
The original design of the 'jeton' was possibly that of Houdon, as the portrait on the 'jeton' and that of the bust are exactly the same. The 'jeton' is so moving from a Masonic point of view that it might have been expected that a medal should be produced in commemoration of the event. We know that the fundamental difference between a 'jeton' and a medal is that the former is not linked to Time, it describes a state and not a particular moment, and the other is linked to Time, either the moment of its striking or a particular event. It was then decided to produce a 'jeton', this being a tradition in the Masonic and initiatory circles, where medals appear only later on with the introduction of socially established Masonry.
At the time, it was impossible to predict the immense importance of this event : the independence of the United States of America. A new era was beginning and this 'jeton' was present when the architect of this birth was celebrated by his brethren and friends. Indeed Bernier, who was treasurer and engraver of the 'jeton' was present, as was Houdon, the sculptor of the bust (now kept at the Louvre museum ) and who probably designed the model. The initials of François Bernier, separated by the Masonic triangle, can be seen on the reverse side of the coin and his full signature beneath the engraving of the bust ; he was the official engraver of the Chancellery and of the Royal Mint of Paris.
The Nine Muses, Nine Sisters, the daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne (goddess of Memory) are represented on the reverse side of the 'jeton', as on the 'jeton' in honour of the Comte de Milly, which moreover uses the same die for the back as that of Franklin. The Muses lived on mount Helicon in Boeotia mountains near mount Olympus. They represent Eloquence, Tragedy, Comedy, Love poetry, History, Music, Dance, Lyrical poetry and Astronomy. They can be seen here at work in the mountains, sculpting a temple, which is reminiscent of the temple of Vesta at Tivoli, on which the sculptor probably modelled his work. They represent the Masonic ideal of perfection in concrete and spiritual matters, by means of quest, of a given example and of working together. Initially, the lodge was to be given the name of 'The Nine Muses' but the Direction of the Grand Orient, following strictly at this time the constitutions of Anderson and wishing to maintain the Christian character of Freemasonry, considered this name to be incompatible with the group name 'St John's Lodge'. The spirit of St John's gospel seemed incompatible with a name of pagan origin and the lodge finally had to take the name by which it was known throughout History.
This extremely rare 'jeton', up to now known to French coin-collectors only by the reference 'Zirkel', represents at one and the same time a major historical event of world history, an object of 18th century Art and a fore-runner to the French Revolution ; it is quite understandable that this 'jeton' has taken on mythical proportions..

Historischer Hintergrund
