In 1820, the absolutism of King Ferdinand VII was challenged by the liberals. The king had to reinstate the Constitution of Cadiz (1812). Locked up in Aranjuez, the king, under pressure from the monarchists, appealed to Louis XVIII, who sent an expeditionary force both to reinstate the absolute monarchy and to eradicate liberal ideas.
