Historischer Hintergrund
ÄGYPTEN - PTOLEMÄISCHES KÖNIGREICH ÄGYPTEN - PTOLEMAIOS IV PHILPATOR
(221-205 v. Chr.)
Ptolemaios IV. (238–205 v. Chr.) war der Sohn von Ptolemaios III. Euergetes und Berenike II. Ihm wurde aus Spott der Titel Philopator (Freund seines Vaters) verliehen, da er beschuldigt wurde, ihn vergiftet zu haben. Während seiner Herrschaft war es Sosibios, der tatsächlich über Ägypten herrschte. Im Jahr 219 verlor er Seleukia Pieria, das er an Antiochus III. den Großen abtreten musste, doch der Sieg bei Raphia im Jahr 217 v. Chr. stellte das Gleichgewicht wieder her und ermöglichte es ihm, Coele-Syrien von den Seleukiden zurückzuerobern. Ptolemaios IV. starb nach einem ausschweifenden Leben im Alter von 33 Jahren und hinterließ ein fünfjähriges Kind, Ptolemaios V., unter der Vormundschaft seiner Frau/Schwester Arsinoe III..
