Les coins des premières pièces furent réalisés par Charles Wurden, graveur bruxellois, vers 1875, et cédés au roi. Les pièces frustes furent peut-être frappées sur place sur l'ordre de Norodom Ier. Elles étaient offertes lors de grandes manifestations. Ces pièces furent peut-être fabriquées et mises en circulation en 1899 au moment de l'incinération de la reine-mère décédée deux ans auparavant.
The dies of the first coins were made by Charles Wurden, a Brussels engraver, around 1875, and given to the king. The rough coins were perhaps struck on site on the orders of Norodom I.
