Historischer Hintergrund
BITHYNIEN - KÖNIGREICH BITHYNIEN - SOCRATES CHRESTOS
(93-92 - 89-88 v. Chr.)
Nikomedes IV. trat die Nachfolge seines Vaters Nikomedes III. an. Er musste sich zwischen 93-92 und 89-88 v. Chr. der Usurpation seines Halbbruders Sokrates Chrestos stellen, unterstützt von Mithridates VI. Eupator (120-63 v. Chr.). In Wirklichkeit bestieg Sokrates Chrestos mit Unterstützung der Bithynier zweimal den Thron, das zweite Mal nach dem pontischen Sieg von Amnias im Sommer 89 v. Chr., der Nikomedes IV. zur Flucht und zur Suche nach Rom um Hilfe zwang. Schließlich wurde der Usurpator im Herbst 88 v. Chr. von seinem Beschützer beseitigt.
