Le CIC est la plus ancienne banque française de dépôts. En 1859, la Société générale de crédit industriel et commercial est créée le 7 mai par décret impérial de Napoléon III. En 1864, le CIC participe de façon significative au capital de banques en création telles que la Société lyonnaise. En 1895, la première succursale à l'étranger, celle de Londres, est inaugurée. En 1896, le CIC participe à la création de plusieurs banques à travers le monde : Banque de Roumanie, de Madrid, de Nouvelle-Calédonie, de la Réunion et de Madagascar. En 1917, les actions des sociétés filiales régionales apparaissent au bilan du CIC.
CIC is the oldest French deposit bank. In 1859, the Société Générale de Crédit Industriel et Commercial was created on May 7 by imperial decree of Napoleon III. In 1864, CIC made a significant contribution to the capital of newly established banks such as the Société Lyonnaise. In 1895, the first foreign branch, in London, was inaugurated. In 1896, CIC participated in the creation of several banks around the world: the Bank of Romania, the Bank of Madrid, the Bank of New Caledonia, the Bank of Réunion, and the Bank of Madagascar. In 1917, the shares of regional subsidiaries appeared on CIC's balance sheet.
