La cathédrale de Cologne (en allemand: Kölner Dom) de son nom plus officiel Haute Église Cathédrale Saint-Pierre et Sainte-Marie, est une église catholique romaine de la ville de Cologne ainsi que la cathédrale de l'archevêché de Cologne. Avec ses 157 mètres de haut et ses 533 marches, elle est la deuxième plus haute église d'Allemagne et du monde pour ses tours, après la cathédrale d'Ulm.
1248 : pose de la première pierre par l'évêque puis construction du chevet et de la nef.
1880 : achèvement de l'édifice, après 632 ans et 2 mois.

Historischer Hintergrund

Guillaume I. ist der zweite Sohn von Frédéric Guillaume III und der Bruder von Frédéric Guillaume IV. Er war seit 1856 Regent für seinen Bruder, als er 1861 dessen Nachfolge antrat. Er heiratet Augusta von Sachsen-Weimar, mit der er zwei Kinder hat, darunter Friedrich III. Mit seinem Minister Otto von Bismarck wird er die deutsche Einheit erreichen. Der Preußisch-Österreichische Krieg von 1866 mit Sadowas Sieg entledigte ihn von Österreich und stärkte den Norddeutschen Bund. Der 1870 gegen Frankreich begonnene Krieg bringt ihn durch den Frankfurter Frieden am 10. Mai 1871 an Elsass und Lothringen. Am 28. Januar 1871 wurde er im Spiegelsaal des Schlosses Versailles zum deutschen Kaiser gekrönt.. Die Zahlung der von Frankreich gezahlten Entschädigung in Höhe von 5 Milliarden Goldfranken wird es ihm ermöglichen, seine Währungsreform auf der Grundlage des Goldstandards erfolgreich durchzuführen. Bismarck bleibt preußischer Ministerpräsident und setzt seine außenpolitischen Ansichten durch: Isolierung Frankreichs, Bündnis mit Italien, Österreich und Russland. Der Berliner Kongress ermöglicht es Deutschland, als Schiedsrichter Europas aufzutreten und ein Kolonialreich in Afrika, Asien und Ozeanien zu errichten. Wilhelm I. starb 1888 in seinen Neunzigern..
