Inscription d’après DORER sur la base de la statue au droit, sinon cette médaille est signée ANT. BOVY. Antoine Bovy, né à Genève le 14 décembre 1795, mort en Suisse en 1877, est un sculpteur et médailleur suisse naturalisé français.

Le 12 septembre 1814, la Diète fédérale réunie à Zurich admet la principauté de Neuchâtel dans la Confédération suisse, comme 21e canton, en même temps que les cantons du Valais (20e) et de Genève (22e).
La date du 12 septembre 1814 est passée pratiquement sous silence jusqu’en 1989, année du 175e anniversaire. Plusieurs raisons à cela:

50e anniversaire – 1864 :
En 1864 (50e), les Neuchâtelois sont encore trop affectés par les événements contre-révolutionnaires de 1856 pour songer à célébrer les liens avec la Suisse.

100e et 125e anniversaires – 1914 et 1939 :
L’année 1914, année du 100e anniversaire, et celle de 1939, année du 125e anniversaire, coïncident avec les Ière et IIe guerres mondiales. Il n’est dès lors pas imaginable de songer à organiser ce type de festivités.

150e anniversaire – 1964 :
En 1964, on fait en quelque sorte concorder le 150e anniversaire avec la journée cantonale de l’Exposition nationale. On octroie cependant un crédit pour la publication de l’ouvrage « Neuchâtel et la Suisse » (édité par la Chancellerie d’Etat en 1969 seulement), ainsi que pour la commande d’une cantate. Ces décisions font suite à une prise d’armes politique initiée par un député qui s’indignait à l’idée de fêter une telle date, imparfaite et impure selon lui, estimant que les Neuchâtelois de 1814 à 1848 se sentaient double nationaux et n’avaient pas encore de fait un réel sentiment d’appartenance à la Suisse. Il demande donc de n’en faire qu’un rappel culturel et historique et non un prétexte à des libations populaires. Il est appuyé par le Grand Conseil et c’est pourquoi il n’y eut pas de manifestation officielle de cet anniversaire.
