Andreas Hofer (1767-1810) est un aubergiste et un chef de milice du Tyrol. Suite au rattachement de la région à la Bavière, il devient l’un des chefs de la rébellion du Tyrol en 1809 soutenue par l’Autriche. L’occupation de Vienne par les troupes de Napoléon Ier aura provisoirement raison des velléités tyroliennes. Hofer est arrêté par les troupes italiennes en 1810 et fusillé. Il devient alors un martyr, symbole d’un Tyrol libre.
Andreas Hofer (1767-1810) was an innkeeper and militia leader from Tyrol. Following the region's annexation to Bavaria, he became one of the leaders of the Tyrolean rebellion in 1809, supported by Austria. The occupation of Vienna by Napoleon I's troops temporarily put an end to Tyrolean ambitions. Hofer was arrested by Italian troops in 1810 and shot. He then became a martyr, a symbol of a free Tyrol.
