Almost 480 lots are on offer at the CGB Numismatique Paris Live Auction – 12 September 2017, ranging from ancient coins, French royal and modern coins to world coins and medals.
The sale starts with a wonderful collection of ancient coins – more than 80 Greek coins, including a superb Sybaris didrachm (lot 443283) and a beautiful Syracuse drachm (lot 442847). Then there are Roman and provincial coins. This selection offers in particular a nice set of solidi and aurei including an extremely rare aureus of Domitian (lot 433749). As with our last auctions, we have focused on coins with a pedigree (private collection, sales catalog, declared and sometimes published treasure troves, etc.). The same was done for the 24 lots of Byzantine coins offered for sale.
About ten Celtic coins complete this ancient coins portion. Two exceptional coins are offered, i.e. a Danubian Celts’ tetradrachm with a janiform head (lot 442337) and a stater with a Carnutes wheel cross (lot 444108).
Carolingian coins will also be present with a previously unseen coin of King Pepin II of Aquitaine (lot 438244) and a denier of King Charles II the bald with the king’s bust on the averse (lot 438241).

The royal coins portion of this sale gathers a set of about one hundred coins, a large part of which come from the Charlet collection. Among other coins, two King Louis XIV écus called “au buste drapé à l’antique” - 1687 A and 1689 A come from this collection (lots 445424 and 445410). King Louis XIV will also be in the spotlight with a double 1711 L, Louis d’or “au soleil”, AU (lot 442590), or a rare 1651 Louis d'or “à la mèche longue” for Angers (lot 438483).
Among the fifteen or so feudal coins offered for sale, a denier “à l’hermine” for the Duchy of Brittany (lot 445763) or a Louis de Male’s gold lion for the County of Flanders (lot 442621) will particularly attract your attention.

Then there are French modern coins (from the post French revolution period). Among the 88 lots offered for sale, 55 were certified and graded by PCGS and NGC, including lot 434082, a 20-franc gold “Napoléon tête nue” coin, Gregorian calendar, 1806 Q, PCGS AU53 – the rarest coin from the F.513 series. The most remarkable lots of this part of the sale are a display case of two series of height silver piedforts from 1960 to 1966 (lot 443333) and a display box containing two series of seven pre-series of 20 centimes 1961 contest coins without the word Essai (lot 444104).

The sale will continue with a selection of particularly specialized and sought after world coins. Russia is well-represented (about 15 lots) with – among other things – a 2-kopeck coin of Alexander II, 1862, Warsaw, PCGS MS 64 (lot 438941) and an Alexander II polushka, 1855, Warsaw, PCGS MS 65 (lot 438930), which are the highest grades now listed by PCGS. Two Czechoslovak coins – a 2-dukaty coin and a 5-dukatu coin (lots 438634 and 438642) – are the seminal coins of this selection.

The sale will end with a set of Mines de Lens medals.
